I Don t Need Feminism - 936 Words
I donââ¬â¢t need feminism because I really appreciate when strange and creepy men remind me to smile, because Iââ¬â¢m constantly forgetting. I donââ¬â¢t need feminism because I love how all cleaning product advertisements are marketed towards me, a woman! I don t need feminism because when I m jogging I want to know if men driving past think I m a slut or not. The inappropriate opinions of creepy strangers are really important to me, so I appreciate them yelling out. I hope its clear that the previous statements were entirely sarcastic. I identify as a feminist and you should all consider yourselves feminists as well. I would like to begin this speech first by addressing an issue that is gaining heat in todayââ¬â¢s society. Words like feminazi and man-hater accompany the word feminist, and thus have equated feminists to disgruntled women whose sole purpose is to blame men for everything. As a result, many people ââ¬â both men and women - have hesitated to associate themselves with the feminist movement. I want to ease peopleââ¬â¢s minds by providing the actual definition of feminism, as provided by the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Feminism is ââ¬Å"the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunitiesâ⬠Equal. Note that word. In the world we live in today, women are not equal to men. Women experience catcalls on the street, less pay for identical jobs, lack of political representation, and an outrageous number of women are victims to sexual assault every day.
